COCOS ISLAND, COSTA RICA
Born from a volcanic eruption over 2 million years ago, the island’s basalt cliffs are surrounded by some of the most spectacular diving on the planet.
Here, pristine waters take you back in time to unspoiled oceans, where you’ll encounter large pelagic travelers, including rays, whales, dolphins, and a dozen species of sharks. And let’s not forget the larger-than-life schools of scalloped hammerheads.
Often shrouded in mist and mystery, Cocos Island is known for its rich history of explorers and adventurers that dates back centuries – as evidenced by the ancient rock carvings that emerge at low tide in Chatham Bay.
Topside, Cocos Island National Park is a living laboratory with scores of endemic species. Beneath the surface, it’s a safe haven for marine animals big and small – from endangered whale sharks to the endemic rosy-lipped batfish. Among the sharkiest places on Earth, Cocos is truly one of the last frontiers for extreme scuba divers.

UNDERSEA HUNTER:
SEA HUNTER VESSEL
-
After hundreds of diving expeditions, the Sea Hunter has evolved into the consummate hybrid of luxury and utility. This 115-foot (35 meters) cruiser boasts a global reach, and was specifically conceived for long-range journeys to remote destinations like Cocos Island.
The spacious craft has everything a serious diver or photographer could ask for. Individual gear lockers, private camera/strobe storage bins with 110 & 220 ac power, dual camera rinse tanks and even a drone takeoff/landing pad.
Ten comfortable staterooms accommodate every amenity with plenty of room for up to 20 passengers, including ensuite controllable air conditioning, hot water showers, daily housekeeping and complimentary laundry service. Ample public spaces include an indoor lounge and study plus an expansive sundeck for relaxing in between dives.
A well-equipped galley enables our chefs to prepare delicious, healthy and varied cuisine for all dietary preferences – using only the freshest, sustainably sourced ingredients. With three scheduled meals per day and snacks in between, there are ample opportunities to refuel.
Sea Hunter’s brilliantly-engineered design is complemented by a seasoned crew of ten, who give it their all to ensure that every voyage is a trip of a lifetime. Together they have introduced adventure divers, professional photographers and cinematographers to an unparalleled level of service.

The upper deck features 2 suites equipped with shelves, drawers and hanging hooks, a desk and chair and a luxury bathroom with granite surfaces. Each suite uses 110-volt outlets suitable for your electronic equipment. The rooms have large windows, are carpeted throughout, and contain a satellite telephone for international calls. Each distinctly themed room has original hand-painted artwork by Carlos Hiller painted on the walls.

The Sea Hunter’s lower deck features two types of cabins: Double cabins (one queen size bed with optional upper twin size bed) and Twin cabins (two twin-sized beds). Every cabin includes personal hanging lockers, shelves, drawers, hanging hooks, a private bathroom and 110-volt outlets suitable for your electronic equipment. Rooms are air-conditioned and carpeted, each with a circular porthole.

ITINERARY
-
You must arrive at least one day prior to the boat departure date.
Upon arrival in San José, you can take a taxi to your hotel. There are always taxis available at the airport, even minivans for those of you who carry a lot of gear.
Mako Expeditions will email your pick-up time 1 or 2 weeks before trip departure.
Air transport, airport transfers, hotel nights, and meals before and after the cruise are not included in the charter.
-
Generally, between 8 AM and 1 PM, we are picked up from certain hotels and transfer everybody by bus to Puntarenas, where we will board the vessel. The drive takes about 2 1/2 hours, and gives us a chance to view the lush forest and rich farmland of the region.
Due to occasional low tides, the boats may need to depart from the pier earlier in the day. Should this occur, you will be transferred to the vessel by skiff.
When all passengers have arrived on board, the vessel will take a 32-36 hour cruise out to Cocos Island.
-
There will be time to arrange dive and camera gear as well as enjoy the Pacific and the sunshine.
Also, the group of incredibly experienced divers provides plenty of stories to pass the time. There are videos and the experience of the Captain and crew to help you get excited for the diving, as if you need them.
In addition, you may want to take this time to take one a diving course.
-
These days are spent diving the pinnacles around the perimeter of Cocos Island.
Divers usually average three dives per day at depths of 60-100 feet (18-30 meters) or more.
-
Make the last 3 dives before the cruise back to Costa Rica.
-
All day to discuss the diving and to compare your adventures!
-
Arrive in Puntarenas. Immediately after breakfast, you will be transported back to San Jose.
We strongly recommend staying one more night on land before flying out, in case of any unforeseen delays.
